1952 Topps
This month I looked at the stories behind three of the cards in my '52 set building project. Two of these are high numbers.
- Joe Black has one of the set's most up-to-date biographies on the back of the card. Dust off your best Dodgers' pitching comparisons for this one.
- Ben Wade had a long, full career as a professional pitcher. Almost all of it took place in the minor leagues, a place where he would make his mark as the architect of a string of Rookie of the Year honors for the Dodgers.
- Joe Presko lasted just 10 games longer in the majors than Ben Wade, but he sure looked like he was having fun doing it.

The National
I didn't go to the National in Chicago. It is something I would like to do but have not yet been able to make it work. That didn't stop me from planning how I would do it, making my feelings on deep dish pizza known, or adding a card to my collection in lieu of going to the show.

Looks I have some reading to catch up on, as it appears that none of your post have appeared on my blogroll for the last two months now. That's been the norm as of late for multiple blogs, but I hadn't realized that yours was among them.
ReplyDeleteThere's some decent cards there to be offering up for free. Nothing for me, unfortunately. I can think of a few other folks though who'll probably really enjoy getting some of these.
The Snuffy Stirnweiss story is a scary one, as someone who takes the train to work.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was reading the Joe Presko chart my first thought was Whitey Ford, who was 5-10 and tearing through the Yankees' farm system. I'm guessing Presko was embellishing the story, maybe he didn't pitch so great in his Yankees tryout.
If nobody else wants them, I'd be glad to give Gilbert, Fowler, Smalley and/or Mossi a good home. But I don't want to block others who might want them too. Thanks for the giveaway!
I'll set those aside and give it until the weekend in case someone else wants to round out a selection with something from that list. I'll put in a consolation prize if anything gets claimed.
